In my work I use a variety of techniques. and materials.
I am fundamentally inspired by the natural world and the intertwining of material, imagination and intuition.
In my jewellery I use sterling silver, gold, precious and semi precious stones, pearls, and sometimes miscellaneous natural elements such as fossils, pebbles, coral.
I also integrate my own resin elements into some of my pieces.
My work is predominately one of a kind but I also make pieces for clients,. Sometimes the project involves up cycling their existing jewellery , exploring how to re -work or re-imagine elements into a new design.
I find a physical tactile language through object making with its materials and techniques and its potential for symbolism .In my recent work ,both in jewelry and sculpture I've incorporated symbols such as question marks, ladders, the heart , the tree, visual clues bringing imbued meaning to the work.
A brief bio.
Originally from Wales, and a graduate of the Birmingham School of Jewellery and Silversmithing in England U.K. I have maintained a studio practice as a professional contemporary artist jeweller in Toronto since the 1980s. I've consistently created original works for sale and by commission as well as exhibited and sold my work through galleries and juried or curated exhibitions.
In 2003 I was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts.
I have expanded my practice to include sculptural work, exploring form, scale and material outside of the wearable.
Artist statement;
'I consider my formative years growing up in the natural beauty of Wales as an essential influence on the development of my aesthetic .Through out my work I often aim to reflect a reverence for nature while remaining innovative and contemporary. I explores the qualities of my chosen material through form, detail, texture and layering, using a variety of techniques.
I find jewellery an intriguing form of personal expression, both for myself as the maker and for the individual who wears it. I hope that the pieces I make will be worn and personally imbued with value to become meaningful objects in someones life.
My sculptures are an extension of my exploration of material and form ,using metal, resin , clay and found objects they communicate my ideas beyond the wearable.'
