My work is an intertwining of material and imagination, often inspired by the natural world and our relationship to it. In my jewellery pieces I use sterling silver, gold, precious and semi precious stones, pearls, resin as well as natural elements such as fossils, pebbles and coral. Many of my works are one of a kind pieces.
I also make custom pieces for clients including finding it a worthwhile challenge to re use materials, as in up cycling existing jewellery into a new piece.
A brief bio.
Originally from Wales, and a graduate of the Birmingham School of Jewellery and Silversmithing in England U.K.. I have maintained a studio practice as a professional contemporary artist jeweller in Toronto since the 1980s. I've consistently created original works for sale and by commission as well as exhibited and sold my work through galleries and juried or curated exhibitions.
In 2003 I was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts.
My practice includes sculptural work exploring form, scale and material outside of the wearable.
Artist statement;
'I consider my formative years growing up in the natural beauty of Wales, Britain as an essential influence on the development of my aesthetic .Through out my work I often aim to reflect a reverence for nature while remaining innovative and contemporary. I explore the qualities of my material through form, detail, texture and layering, using a variety of techniques.
Jewellery can be a form of personal expression, both for the maker and the individual who wears it and I hope that the pieces I make will become meaningful objects in a persons life.
My sculptures are an extension of my exploration of material and form, using metal, resin, clay and found objects, they communicate my ideas beyond the wearable.'
